SOCIAL MEDIA SNAP: Picking on Facebook, #Music, and Pinterest Stress

Social media changes so much in a week that it can be hard to keep up. Check back every Friday for our roundup of stories we think you should know about in our Social Media Snap.

One of my favorite things about writing the Social Media Snap is that it’s on Friday. After spending all week striving to make our clients’ wildest marketing and PR dreams come true, it’s refreshing to spend a few minutes catching up on what went on in the world this week. Some weeks it seems like the news never sleeps as earth-shattering events unfold day after day. Other weeks, the most exciting news out there is about Grumpy Cat meeting Anderson Cooper (which I know to some is HUGE NEWS). But no matter what kind of week it is, I will say that the Social Media Snap always provides me with great conversation starters for Happy Hour. So, without further adieu, let’s get to it!

I bet you’re sitting at your desk right now, daydreaming of far off lands and exotic adventures. You’ve got a bad case of wanderlust propelling you out of your office toward the unconquered horizon. Too bad silly things like money and responsibilities get in the way. Now thanks to Instagram you can see all the wonders of the world, through artfully selected filters, right from your very own computer!

I’m a huge Game of Thrones fan, but I admit that sometimes other priorities get in the way of my viewing time. This is not the case for Mark Zuckerberg. Details came out this week that last year Zuckerberg put final negotiations to buy Instagram on hold to host a Game of Thrones viewing party for friends. That’s real dedication right there.

Speaking of Facebook, turns out Facebook Home isn’t the hot ticket item many expected it to be. I’m shocked (not really). After only one month the “Facebook Phone” is down to 99 cents. According to the article, “Barely a month into the first ‘Facebook Phone’s’ life, the Facebook Home-sporting HTC’s first price has been slashed from $99.99 with a two year contract to just 99 cents with the same AT&T two-year agreement”. You can’t win ‘em all, Zuckerberg.

I promise I’m not picking on Facebook (regardless of what the title says). This week USA Today posted an article recapping the good, the bad, and the ugly coming out of Facebook and Google lately, including YouTube Premium (the good), Facebook Home (the bad), and Google Glass (the ugly).

It turns out that Twitter is good for more than just following Amanda Bynes on her downward spiral into crazy town. Twitter has launched a new app, Twitter Music (or #music) that lets you listen to 30-second song samples from various lists of artists. Because obviously a company that only lets you write 140 characters would NEVER let you listen to a full song.

I spend a lot of time on Pinterest cultivating my perfect wardrobe, home décor, recipe collection, and wedding. Unfortunately for me (and every other Pinner out there) Pinterest is just a fantasy world of desires that will never see the light of day. I’ve accepted this, but apparently some people haven’t. A recent survey found that 42 percent of moms have suffered from “Pinterest Stress” – the worry that you aren’t your best, craftiest, most culinary Pinterest self. Luckily some have embraced this stress by turning it into comedy, or maybe group therapy, on the Pinterest Fail blog.

This Sunday is Mother’s Day. Sadly, I will not be able to celebrate with my mom this year since we live 2,000 miles apart. So I will have to do the best I can by sending her a card, maybe some flowers, and of course posting a “Happy Mother’s Day” message for her on all of my social media accounts. Thankfully USA Today informs me that I won’t be the only one taking to social media this Sunday to celebrate the most incredible woman I know (though apparently Twitter would rather you stay away from Social Media on Sunday).

Or maybe I could get a tattoo in honor of my mom. That would be a lot more meaningful than a Tweet, right? Ok, maybe I’ll hold off on the tat, but these mom-inspired tattoos from Buzzfeed sure look tempting.

Happy weekend!
